Maybe all this “occupy everything” deal is going a bit too far, but just bear with me for less than 500 words as I attempt to wrap the entirety of the Occupy Movement up into something that is born into every human heart who ever lived.
Back when the Occupy Movement was first gaining speed here in Canada, I overheard some “Christians” doing some name calling and shouting unhelpful things like, “get a job.” This disturbed me and didn’t fully know how to respond, so I tweeted and cross-posted this to Facebook: “The current #occupy movement is telling a story. #Pastors, are you listening, or throwing insults? Please listen.”
I have a few friends who would have been camped out in Occupy Vancouver HQ if they lived close by, or could actually get the time off of work. I wanted to find out more, so I did my best to listen to them and hear what Occupy was all about and why it was important to them, and why it should be important to me.
What I found out is that the Occupy movement was less about the re-distribution of wealth and more about a longing for rulers who ruled with a generous heart and true care for their people. It was less about demanding tax-breaks for the poor and higher taxes for the rich; Occupy was about a desire for the lawmakers to weigh with equal scales and provide justice to the poor and downtrodden.
Unfortunately, the movement had seemed to be taken over by career protesters and flashy media stories. However, the spectacle merely served as a mask to cover a deeper-seated desire that resonates with every human heart…the desire for a government to rule rightly.
Jesus knew that the poor were truly blessed: “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.” (Matthew 5:3 ESV)
There is a longing in every human heart to have a just, generous and caring government, and I believe that there is one who is more than worthy of my vote and more than deserving of my trust – Jesus Christ.
