Earthly Government and the Kingdom of Heaven.

This week, I will be posting a little bit about politics. I’m not really a political voice, but I do vote in every election. I don’t publicly support any particular party or person, but I do like to talk politics from time to time. I actually happen to have some very smart friends who have spent more time than I researching, who have been closely involved in politics and who also have far stronger opinions than I do about left and right political ideologies, conspiracy theories, movements like Occupy and the like.

What will set this post apart from other political commentaries, perhaps is my frame of reference. Though I live in Canada and obey the laws of the land, pay taxes, and submit to the current government who is in authority over me, I recognize a higher authority. Though I obey my earthly rulers and lawmakers, there is a transcendent kingdom who’s rule is better than anyone could ever ask for of which I am a citizen. I am a disciple of Jesus Christ. Jesus is my ultimate authority. He is my king, and I am a citizen of the Kingdom of Heaven.

Many earthly rulers that we’ve seen throughout history have been good, generous and just, both on the left and right side of the centre, but none have been perfect. None of them have hit the nail on the head. We’re lying to ourselves if we think that certain politicians if they get voted in will be THE ONE to fix everything. Its not going to happen. Its never happened. Every single ideology has fallen short in some way. Some have come close, maybe, but no earthly government comes even close to the government of Jesus.

Let me quote a passage that is usually read out at Christmas time:

For to us a child is born,
to us a son is given;
and the government shall be upon his shoulder,
and his name shall be called
Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God,
Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.
Of the increase of his government and of peace
there will be no end,
on the throne of David and over his kingdom,
to establish it and to uphold it
with justice and with righteousness
from this time forth and forevermore.
The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

(Isaiah 9:6-7 ESV)

Based on this prophecy from Isaiah, Jesus is a ruler of a peaceful kingdom established and upheld by justice and righteousness, he is a wonderful counsellor, a loving father who lives forever and his kingdom is increasing and bringing peace as it grows.

Stay tuned for more discussion about Jesus as a ruler in the coming days.
