I heard it, but I’m not sure if I believe it.
Listening in to Scott Didmon make the call on Friday night, the play-by-play man was obviously ecstatic as the Victoria Grizzlies pulled out a 6-5 win in Coquitlam.
He had every reason to be as the Grizz snapped a 12-game winless skein that dated back to Jan. 6.
He wasn’t quite as elated as coach Rob Doyle, but it was close.
“I’m still standing here looking at the score clock, but it’s true,” a relieved Doyle told me over the phone shortly after the win as I stated, “I heard it but wasn’t sure if I believed it.”
“It feels awesome and I’m so happy for the kids,” said Doyle. “They played to the end and they played hard.”
Victoria used two-goal efforts from Alex Holland and newcomer Mitchell Smith, who joined the team on another emergency basis as bodies continue to fall to injury. Smith played three games this season as an affiliate with the Prince George Spruce Kings and also dressed for a few last year for the Grizz.
But the visitors received an even bigger performance from goaltender Taylor Pears, who stood on his head for the second straight outing, stopping 58 Coquitlam shots. The 20-year-old was coming off a 52-save outing in a 2-1 loss to Powell River last Saturday.
“He was phenomenal,” stressed Doyle. “Unbelievable. Even better than last week.”
Grizz general manager and assistant coach Victor Gervais, who remained at home for personal reasons, also tuned in to Didmon.
“Unreal,” Gervais said of his goaltender. “You know, when we picked him up his dad told me he would win four or five games for us. I said, ‘Are you sure?’
“He said, ‘I’ll guarantee you he wins three or four.’ He’s been pretty good the last two games,” said a delighted Gervais, who was just as happy as Doyle to see the winless skid snapped.
“It’s been a long time. The kids have been playing well, especially with a short lineup. The guys really stepped it up.”
Now, can they win two straight for the first time since Dec. 14, as they head to Alberni Valley on Saturday?
That could be asking too much for a short bench, but wouldn’t that be a story? Quite a tale for a club that has poured its guts out the last two weeks without the likes of goalie Garrett Rockafellow (knee), scoring leader Wes Myron (shoulder), new captain Kevin Smith (shoulder) and defencemen Jesse Ursic (leg laceration) and Jaden Schmeisser (jaw).
Hey, you can’t make this stuff up.
